Nep - the other pc sheet is easier to use and enter data into, IMO. Just another option.

Thanks!! smile

I tried to post the PDF but it said it is an unsupported file format. Anyone know of a PDF to gif or the like?

Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 02/09/14 16:41 UTC
There are pdf conversion programs available. I don't know any to recommend. What I did was just use a screen capture program (I use MWSnap. It is free and easy to use.) I cropped the pdf and saved it into MS-Paint then saved that as a jpeg.
Posted By: nem Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 02/09/14 17:07 UTC
grin Just typed mine up in Notepad tbh, but the gallery feature in UBB.threads probably only supports image formats (I'll delve).

A PDF file is often nothing more than a wrapper for a jpeg image anyway (like when you scan in a book without an OCR).

Give this site a try:

http://pdf2jpg.net/

It's free, fast, with decent output and no email address required.

Note to all, I corrected 2 different pcs Passive Perception stats so I wanted to remind everyone how that is calculated. It is NOT equal to your Wisdom Stat. Passive Perception is:

10+Wisdom Bonus+Proficiency Bonus(if Proficient in Perception)

So, anyone with a Wisdom of 16(+3 Bonus) who is not Proficient in Perception would have:

10+3=13 Passive Perception

A pc with a Wisdom of 14(+2 Bonus) who is Proficient in Perception would have:

10+2+2=14

A section from the rules about Magic Items:

Quote
Magic Items

Using a Magic Item

A magic item’s description explains how the item works.
Handling a magic item is enough to give a character
a sense that something is extraordinary about the
item. The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an
item’s properties. Alternatively, a character can focus
on one magic item during a short rest, while being in
physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the
character learns the item’s properties, as well as how
to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is
enough to tell the taster what the potion does.

Some magic items require a creature to form a bond
with them before their magical properties can be used.
This bond is called attunement, and certain items
have a prerequisite for it. If the prerequisite is a class,
a creature must be a member of that class to attune
to the item.

Attuning to an item requires a creature to spend
a short rest focused on only that item while being in
physical contact with it (this can’t be the same short rest
used to learn the item’s properties). This focus can take
the form of weapon practice, meditation, or some other
appropriate activity. If the short rest is interrupted, the
attunement attempt fails. Otherwise, at the end of the
short rest, the creature gains an intuitive understanding
of how to activate any magical properties of the item,
including any necessary command words.

An item can be attuned to only one creature at a time,
and a creature can be attuned to no more than three
magic items at a time. Any attempt to attune to a fourth
item fails; the creature must end its attunement to an
item first. Additionally, a creature can’t attune to more
than one copy of an item. For example, a creature can’t
attune to more than one ring of protection at a time.
A creature’s attunement to an item ends if the creature
no longer satisfies the prerequisites for attunement, if
the item has been more than 100 feet away for at least
24 hours, if the creature dies, or if another creature
attunes to the item. A creature can also voluntarily end
attunement by spending another short rest focused on
the item, unless the item is cursed.

Stealth and hiding - again (N-Game)

As you might imagine, Zeim and I discuss rules in private a lot. We're trying to figure things out all the time.

Stealth and hiding is a very grey area.

The way I'm running, here and in our FTF, is that if a PC or monster has a defined ability to hide BEYOND the basic stealth, I'm letting them do so if they have somewhere to hide. It's how I visualize it. In the goblins case in the N-game, they can move around behind the supplies they can hide because they have a special ability to do so as a bonus action. It makes no sense to give them a special ability and not be able use it.

Note that Zeim might run it differently, which is clearly what WOTC wants. A major objective of the new edition is to give power back to DMs and stop rules lawyers. I will try to be consistent in the way I rule.
Posted By: Nivek Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 10/11/14 20:59 UTC
Neptune, Since it appears we butchered that badly perhaps start over from the point the wolves were calmed.

I always find the biggest problem with message games over ftf play is getting enough information. Yeah we can ask more questions, but each question means a delay. In FTF that's seconds. Here it could be days depending on the GM. So I take what's given and act.

I imagine had we asked some questions there would have been a way to avoid the water trap (twice). Like look for signs or send a scout or simply listen.

Anyways, hopefully we're not frustrating you too much.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 10/11/14 22:07 UTC
Nah. We can move forward and you DIDN'T butcher anything. What you did was non-standard - that's all. What I recommend you do is plow forward. Let me worry about adjustments.

The only reason I am commenting is that this is a new system and some players might be uncomfortable or are afraid of making a mistake. The fact is that there are no mistakes. There are just actions and reactions. Just look at the scene, follow through and all will be well. Trust me on that.

Oh, and please don't take my commentary all that seriously. I cannot underline this more. I'm not frustrated at all. My discussing things is to help everyone understand what they can do in the system. These are NOT a criticisms even if they sound like it.

Just play on.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 11/11/14 00:52 UTC
Yes. Nep and I discussed it at length. Even in my game I had to fudge a roll or two (mostly for Surprise/Initiative), though Nep had to do much more.

This encounter was written such that barring dramatically unbalanced dice rolling one way or the other the only real way to win was to sneak up the garbage chute immediately, before warning the occupants. You then had a chance of gaining surprise.

It was also unlucky that the "N" party chose to attack from two directions. The module called for the Bugbear to flee once the Wolf was killed. That is what happened in the "Z" game and made the encounter MUCH less deadly. In the "N" game, by surrounding the room we cut off the Bugbear's escape route and he fought to the death instead.

Also, the Sleep spell by Balthazar helped a lot to reduce the lethality of the combat.

All in all a bit too lethal for 1st level pcs, IMO. No room for error. Only the perfect plan and decent rolling would work.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 11/11/14 02:11 UTC
First and foremost, any 'lethality' can always be mitigated by the GM <g> So =that= means that the GM has the leeway to make the mod as challenging as the PCs want to make it <g>

Jaliera is being asked to open the small chest. There is no check for traps skill so how do we go about this in 5th? I assume her pick locks skill is covered by tools which she has proficiency with but still not clear if this is a skill or we default to another.

Thanks! smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 11/11/14 12:57 UTC
You make a Dex Check for using Thieves Tools. One of your class options gave you the choice to double your proficiency bonus with thieves tools, so if you took that you would get your Dex bonus plus 2x your prof bonus.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 11/11/14 13:00 UTC
OK thanks. What about looking for traps? smile
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 11/11/14 13:46 UTC
Whenever you are looking for anything it's a perception (wisdom) check. Note that I modified Lingo's (my PC in Zeim's game) stats to increase his Wisdom for just that reason and because his modifier was 0. I think Jaliera has a +4 for perception.

Reminder, you can change everything (except for your name) about your PC until 4th level.

...Why is it that my first thought on reading this was to game the system and temporarily shunt more points into constitution in order to get hitpoints and regain consciousness?

Because that would be wrong. wink
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 11/11/14 14:42 UTC
.... and because the DM makes all the rules and he'd not let you get away with it? wink

However, it is a perfectly valid concept as a general rule. If you want to put more points into Con for levels 1-3 to increase your HPs until you gain some levels and then swap those Stat points elsewhere right before leveling up to 4th, it is acceptable by the rules.

It's point is mainly to let you get the feel for your pc in real game play before you lock yourself into anything permanent. You might have thought a skill or power looked good in the rulebook but in practice it's not as good as you thought. Or you thought having a great Dex at the sacrifice of Wis was OK, and then changed your mind, etc.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 11/11/14 15:28 UTC
In my case it was points I put into Charisma which I'm now swapping with Wisdom.

As for you, AJ, you might be on a quest to find a ring of regeneration weg

Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 00:42 UTC
So, I posted a question about tactics going on in the N-game in the WOTC forums. I probably wouldn't post this answer but I just thought it was the worst answer ever and wanted to share:

Neptune wrote:
Quote:
Bugbear hides behind a closed door in a room while friends get involved in a fight with the PC's outside. It readies an action to attack anyone that opens the door. Melee outside ends. Fighter kicks in the door (fully expecting a problem). Does the bugbear get a reaction attack? Does the figther? In what order?

Answer:
Quote:
There are a bazillion ways you could rule this depending on the exact details.

1) The Fighter enters and the Readied action goes off, so the bugbear gets an attack and then back to normal initiative
2) The Fighter enters in a way that Surprises the bugbear, so he can't take a reaction until his first turn
3) Combat ended and is starting over, the Bugbear is laying in wait so gets Surprise
4) Combat ended and is starting over, the fighter busts in unexpectedly and gets surprise.
5) No one gets surprise
6) probably more....

Was that the most useless answer ever?

You all can feel free to provide your thoughts on the situation, even though I've already ruled. I may change the way that I handle stuff like this in the future.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 01:08 UTC
Hmmm ... I am not sure that I have anything to offer on the actual ruling, but in terms of the response offered ... I have to say that they certainly covered all the bases <g>

From their perspective, they has a pretty 'open ended' question since =they= were not running the encounter. So on the one hand I cannot fault them for offering all the possibilities that were within the realm of possibility based on the limited knowledge they had of the particular situation. On the other hand, I can understand how it might have been more helpful to get a specific ruling.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 01:23 UTC
I think the gist is they want every table to make their own ruling. In some ways thus is nice. But to 3.5 or 4.0ers it is probably disconcerting.
Posted By: Dugan Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 05:39 UTC
Neptune,

Just wanted a clarification for shape changing. I had picked 'Circle of the Moon' for my druids circle's choice.

In the second paragraph under "Circle of the Moon" there is mention of Combat Wild Shape:
Quote:
When you choose this circle at 2nd level, you gain the ability to use Wild Shape on your turn as a bonus action, rather than as an action.

So do I have to do the Wild Shape (as a bonus action) before any other actions (i.e attacks or movement)?
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 12:22 UTC
Dugan, Yes you do. I didn't see that. Awesome ability. You can change, move and attack all in the same round. Have at it!
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 12:25 UTC
MikeD,

I did get a better answer from someone else but the reply I posted here outlined all the reasons why I asked the question in the first place.

The better answer said it all depended on whether I considered it to be one or several melees. I consider this to be one continuous battle.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 12:47 UTC
Yes. I had no issues with how you ruled.

Now, had we stopped to search the bodies and the other room first, and had Kriv not listened at the door to hear that someone was in there, THEN I'd have ruled a new encounter and given the Bugbear surprise.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 14:34 UTC
I understand why you were unhappy with the reply. I was just saying that I can understand why they gave you a less specific answer than you wanted <g>
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 04/06/15 15:29 UTC
Zeim, that's how I felt about it and your 2-cents makes me feel better about it.

Mike, Yeah. I understand. How would you rule and why?
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 05/06/15 00:48 UTC
I'm fine with the ruling, it makes sense. Bugbear was going to attack when someone opened the door, fighter was alert, aware and expecting trouble, so attack goes off but no surprise. Seems logical, flows well.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 05/06/15 12:41 UTC
AJ did a pretty good job justifying what I thought was a =very= reasonable adjudication based on what I have read here <g>
Posted By: Dugan Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 06/06/15 08:06 UTC
Neptune,

As my druid is now a large bear, any bonuses to attack? Could you please provide me with its combat info?
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 06/06/15 11:43 UTC
There you go, making me look up rules <sigh>.
Until 4th level, you can change into a creature of 1/4 CR (challenge rating). It cannot fly or swim. The lowest CR bear is a black bear which is 1/2 CR, so you cannot change into a bear.

However, there are good choices:
Boar
Constrictor snake
Draft horse
Elk
Giant badger
Giant centipede
Giant lizard
Giant poisonous snake
Giant wolf spider
Panther
Riding horse
Wolf

I found this somewhere. It should help: 5e Monsters
Posted By: Dugan Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 06/06/15 15:23 UTC
Neptune, from what I read though a Druid of the Circle of the Moon can go up to CR 1
Thanks for the list, I'll stick with the brown bear to attack with in my current encounter.

Quote:
Circle Forms
The rites of your circle grant you the ability to transform into more dangerous animal forms. Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wild Shape to transform into a beast with a challenge rating as high as 1 (you ignore the Max. CR column of the Beast Shapes table, but must abide by the other limitations there).

Wow. That is true. A truly awesome feature.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 30/06/15 00:49 UTC
ATTUNEMENT
Some magic items need to be attuned, to bond them with the user. There may be class restrictions. To attune an item, you need one short rest to learn the properties and another short rest to attune to the item. Attuning means concentrating your entire attention to the item either by meditation or practice (like for weapons). You can only attune to 3 items and you can't attune to two of the same item (no stacking rings of protection).

There is a chance to chat, more likely on the way back, could do a PM? wink
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 04/09/15 17:26 UTC
You can figure it out right here, or PM. There could be danger along the way. In fact, this kind of screams out to me weg
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 04/09/15 18:07 UTC
Gypsy - Yes. Just to the tunnel leading outside, which was right near the Alderleaf Farm. If you look at the map, if the men stood in Room 7 (the middle room on the northern wall with the barrels), they could watch as Jaliera and Kallista take the villagers to the tunnel exit. It should be a matter of 10 rounds (5 out and 5 back, without running) to do it so it's not like they'll be gone even as long as a Short Rest.

If you want to have a PM conversation that's fine, Gypsy. Just include Neptune.

Gypsy - did you choose the Arcane Trickster path?
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 16/09/15 17:12 UTC
Yes she did. She has access to all that now.

Gypsy,
Some DMs might want you to do that, but I am playing it as if you had your training leading up to your adventuring days but it all "kicks in" when you reach the appropriate level. Pay attention to the Mage Hand Legerdemain feature. It's quite cool.

I've played my Arcane Trickster at higher levels (11th) and it's lots of fun. You should become one of the most dangerous combatants during melee because of the ways sneak damage can be applied. If you simply target a foe that has an ally adjacent, you get the damage.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 17/09/15 12:33 UTC
OK, I'll read up on that now. And as her mentor is a mage anyway she could easily have had training already. smile

Ken - Note that the +1 AC for the Staff will Stack with the Mage Armour from the Staff, so you might want to put an alternate AC in parenthesis for when you use Mage Armour, which I'd assume you would do every day since it's only 1 charge and lasts for 8 hours.

It will definitely affect her allies if she stays where she is. However, she can climb on the crates and barrels (see the orange token for her) and do it from there to cover this area:

Posted By: Dugan Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 26/11/15 07:06 UTC
Neptune,

I see that Davroar has taken damage and you are showing him having 20 total points. From what I read on being in his wild shape he takes on the hit points of the animal he has changed into. In this case from the reference I found he should have 34 total hit points for a brown bear.

Quoted from Druid page:
Quote:
When you transform, you assume the beast’s hit points and Hit Dice. When you revert to your normal form, you return to the number of hit points you had before you transformed. However, if you revert as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, any excess damage carries over to your normal form. For example, if you take 10 damage in animal form and have only 1 hit
point left, you revert and take 9 damage. As long as the excess damage doesn’t reduce your normal form to 0 hit points, you aren’t knocked unconscious.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 26/11/15 12:24 UTC
OK, thanks! Then that is what she will do. smile

Do I need to roll anything?
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 26/11/15 16:04 UTC
Gypsy,
Yep. 6d10 is the amount of hitpoints you affect. The effect is to blind them. There is no save. Since there are 3 guys and each has 16 hit points. So, channeling my inner programmer:

if you roll 6-15 - none affected else
if you roll 16-31- one is affected else
if you roll 32-47 - two are affected else
if you roll 48-60 - three are affected.

Dugan,
Yep. In effect these are "temporary hitpoints" making the animal form a really powerful ability.

As far as purchasing better armor, Ryssa currently wears a chain shirt and is proficient in light, medium and heavy armor. However, as she is drawn up, she depends more on dexterity than strength, so I can't see her going for really heavy armor.

Perhaps go from chain shirt to chain mail? What do the rest of you think?
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 05/12/15 20:00 UTC
From a story point of view, does it fit your concept? IE was she in more danger than she thought she would be? Or was she adequately protected? Just a thought.

As far as trading up armor I am willing. Luminmorn could us heavier armor. I don't believe he uses Dex for anything.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 05/12/15 21:19 UTC
Exeter - Chain Mail (AC16) does not allow you to use your dex. It counts as Heavy Armour and all heavy armour disallows Dex modifiers. For medium armour ir depends upon whether you care about having a Stealth penalty or not. If you don't want a stealth penalty you can upgrade from a chain shirt (AC13) to a Breastplate (AC14), which increases your AC by 1 and keeps the same Max +2 Dex bonus that you have now. It runs 400gp.

If you don't care about having disadvantage on stealth rolls, and you'd still get the Max +2 Dex bonus, you could upgrade to Scale Mail (AC14) for 50gp or Half Plate (AC15) for 750gp. All of these choices allow you the same Dex bonus you currently have.

Heavy Armour, meaning no Dex bonus to AC allowed AND Disadvantage on Stealth rolls would be: (Ring Mail-AC14(30gp), Chain Mail-AC16(75gp), Splint Mail-AC17(200gp), and Plate Mail-AC18(1500gp)

Pande - Use the list above. I mentioned how much money the party has in the game thread. Note Bern has Leather and could be given the armour Ryssa or Luminmorn no longer need for free and still get an upgrade from it.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 01:49 UTC
Bern is currently in leather so moving to Studded will gain him a +1 to AC.

He isn't above accepting hand me downs ... except ... wouldn't Ryssa's have ... lumps ... in the awkward places <weg> In the worst case, buying is only 45gp (less any trade in allowance <g>)
Posted By: Exeter Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 03:17 UTC
Ryssa does not consider herself a stealthy type character, so I wouldn't be concerned about stealth bonuses. I would, however, want her to retain her Dex bonus, so the most effective and economical choice, I suppose, would be the scale mail at 50gp.

She could probably shake the lumps out of her chain shirt and give that to another character. smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 17:00 UTC
Yes. A chain shirt is not "fitted" armour. It is just a shirt of chain pulled over your head so the 'lumps' would disappear when Ryssa took it off. <g>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 17:07 UTC
So, if Ryssa wants the Scale Mail and Bern takes the Chain Shirt hand-me-down, then Luminmorn would be able to purchase anything short of full Plate Mail. Up to the group if they're willing to chip in their share of treasure if Luminmorn wants something expensive, like half-plate, but it looks like Splint would be a good choice and isn't much money.

Pande - Just double checking your AC, I am not sure I can figure out how he has a 17. Can you explain? I see Chain Mail=16, +1 for your Defensive Class Bonus = 17, then -1 for your Dex of 8 should equal 16, I think?

Either way, upgrading to Splint would bring a +1 to whatever the correct current value should be.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 18:16 UTC
Hmm guess I forgot the -1 for the Dex. So I will upgrade to sCale to make it work again. Just have to note it and remove the appropriate gp.
Thanks
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 20:12 UTC
Ahhh ... but a chain shirt adds a lot of weight with no better AC than the studded. And it limits my ability increase AC later on. Plus the idea of all that 'jangly' stuff doesn't appeal all that much <g>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 21:49 UTC
OK, everyone, please post in the game thread if you decide you want to purchase better armour and update your pc sheet.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 06/12/15 23:58 UTC
Noted in thread and added a reply to my gallery thread. I can't seem to edit anymore.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 13:08 UTC
I think MikeD said once there was some sort of time limit on editing. MikeD, can you open it for Pande?
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 14:24 UTC
lemme see about that ... I just did and edit with out any changes, see if you can get in now Pande. If not, lemme know what you need changed and I will take care of it <g>
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 14:32 UTC
OK ... Went with the studded for 45gp. If there is not enough in 'party treasure', he can pay for that out of personal funds. Just lemme know and I will adjust my personal total. That takes me up to AC 15, BTW.

Also, any chance that we can sell the excess armor for some 'fraction' of the cost? In most of the long running home games we used to run, we were usually able to sell back for half of book value.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 16:21 UTC
Still don't see edit as an option.

Go ahead and make the edits. I think Luminmorn has 200gp, if not it can come from party funds. His chain is also up for grabs if Ryssa wants it.
Thanks
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 16:31 UTC
<sigh> Hmmm ... I think I will do a bit of research and see if I can find a way to make those posts editable.

In the short term, is there anything that needs to change besides the gold? What about armor and AC?

Also, I thought we were using party funds for the upgrades ... at least until it runs out <g> Zeim, do you know where we stand on all this yet?
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 17:13 UTC
Yes, any PC who is purchasing new armour that changes your AC you need to edit your pc sheet in the Gallery, please.

It would also be good to divide up the money:

((900gp) - (new net purchases) = (total remaining) / (#pcs) = gp/pc)

and update your pc sheets with the gold so we don't have to rummage thru all of the game material to recalculate going forwards.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 17:19 UTC
OK ... but for that we would need to have a better grasp on what we each have <wink> Also we will want to address the issue of using 'party' funds. FWIW I am fine with divvying up the 'loot' and each buying their own upgrades. But I don't mind doing the divvy and then letting each buy their own. Either works for me.

If, once we get =that= part sorted, I have not found a way to let folks go in and update their sheets, I will be happy to do that ... as long as I get a hint of what gets changed to what <wink>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 18:18 UTC
For coin, you should have what's on your sheets plus whatever your share is of the calc above. Most of you spent the majority of your starting money on equipment so what's on your sheets shouldn't be that much.

The 900 is AFTER all spending to date (includes Bal's spellbook and Ryssa and Bals recent purchases). It also includes the 100 gp Lingo just brought back, but does NOT include any "loose" treasure Lingo has collected along the way <g>.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 18:21 UTC
OK ... so, just to be clear, the 900 is after the armor upgrades?
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 19:33 UTC
No. It is before any of the armour upgrades.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 20:11 UTC
OK ... so 180 per character.

So, does that leave anyone short for their armor upgrade? I know that Bern would be willing to help anyone needing extra coin for their armor.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 20:49 UTC
Well for Luminmorn his AC doesn't change that is the point of the upgrade, as I had made is mistake earlier and this corrects that. Scale mail replaces chain mail.

As far as gp, just subtract 20gp from his total and his new armor will be paid for.

That does offer chain mail to any PC that wants it. If not he can sell it and recoup a little of what he spent depending upon what the sale price is.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 21:51 UTC
Just to be clear ... you had 'chain mail' ... not 'chain shirt' and are 'trading down' to 'scale mail'?

Chain mail (75gp, AC 16) to Scale mail (50gp, AC 14+dex [max 2]) - cost=17gp (assuming trade in)

Chain shirt (50gp, AC13+dex [max 2]) to Scale maile (50gp, AC 14+dex [max 2]) - cost 25gp (assuming trade in)

So first or second?
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 22:33 UTC
I said the wrong thing Splint mail upgrade.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 23:10 UTC
OK ... check your gallery thread.
Posted By: Exeter Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 07/12/15 23:33 UTC
Ryssa was the one upgrading from Chain Shirt to Scale Male.

According to your numbers, MikeD, the two items have the same basic cost? So this would be a net cost of 25gp after selling the chain shirt that no one else wants.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 08/12/15 00:01 UTC
Seems right to me Ex .. but I am not the GM <weg>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 08/12/15 17:19 UTC
I will take your word.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 09/12/15 13:59 UTC
MikeD - unless anyone objects, how about we presume the party pays for "party" expenses (such as upgrading armour, buying new weapons, adding spells and such) since those help everyone, first, and then divides up whatever money is left after all of that is done. Rather than dividing the money first and then trying to borrow funds from people.

I think it's simpler.

So, can you give us the net remainder per pc after all the armour upgrades are done?

Then once everyone has edited their pc to fix their AC (if it changed) and change their money we're good to go.

Please start a discussion on the trip in the game thread and we can leave.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 09/12/15 14:17 UTC
That works for me Zeim.

OK ... I spent 40, Ex at 25 and 175 for Psnde = 240 (after trade ins). Were there any other expenses? I seem to recall some spell costs and maybe something else. Just to confirm ... we are starting at 900, right?
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 09/12/15 14:45 UTC
Yes. 300gp for Balthazar's spells, another 15gp for miscellaneous purchases, and 35gp for room and board.

Yes. Starting at 900gp. If people have previous money on their sheets from when we started the game they can just add that to whatever the new amount they get is.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 09/12/15 16:29 UTC
OK so: 900 - 590 = 310 / 5 => 62 gp per character after all is said and done.

Now just to be clear ... I had some other GP awards and I want to be sure exactly what the 900 covers so I don't 'double dip'. Here is the list I have:
Code:
Got hired 10
delivered the goods 10
recovered goods 10
goblin lair 4.3
in crevasse 62
Rm 9&10 23

So was any of that included in the 900?

Damn, this is much more confusing than 'at the table' <chuckle>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 09/12/15 17:27 UTC
All of it is included. I went thru the whole module, up to this point, and added it all together. If you've written all that on your sheet already (and anyone else who has) just change it to be 65gp total and we can move on.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 09/12/15 18:04 UTC
Got it <g>

Anyone that needs help fixing their stats in the gallery ... lemme know <g>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 18/12/15 21:55 UTC
OK, for the "N" Game, the summary, as I figure it is:

Money-wise: 935.5 gp of stuff. Plus 300gp from Sildar and Halia = 1235.5gp. Divided by 5 = 247.1 gp each

Magic item-wise:

Potions of Healing - 2
Unidentified Liquid - 2 vials
Scroll - Augury, Fireball, Charm Person
Long Sword +1 "Talon"
Staff of Defense
Iarno's Spellbook Should contain:

Cantips - Light, Mage Hand, Shocking Grasp
1st Level - Charm Person, Magic Missile
2nd Level - Hold Person, Misty Step

As for Magic items Kallista would like the Staff of Defense. We need to identify the two stoppered vials and assuming they are potions we'd have 4 potions to split up.

No one was interested in the magical Long Sword, amazingly enough, so unless somebody has a change of heart we can try to sell it (Neptune?) or gift it to somebody (Sildar?), or hold onto it as a bribe for later?.

As for the scrolls and spellbook. Obviously Kallista is interested, but the rules say anyone can use a scroll. A house rule I have used (and usually Neptune as well) is that you can cast spells out of a spellbook as if they were scrolls. The spell disappears from the spellbook if you do this. You can't rip the pages out and distribute them so the book itself would need to go to one person.

So is anyone interested in the spellbook or the scrolls besides Kallista? Jaliera (I think you are taking the magic using thief option)? Davroar? Kriv? Anyone else?
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 18/12/15 22:11 UTC
Kriv is also a student of the arcane.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 18/12/15 22:23 UTC
Noted. Edited message above and added the spells in Iarno's spellbook. Consider them to be like a single scroll. (Nep - I used the one in my game as a model. If you prefer different spells please edit.)

I suggest somebody taste the vials so we know what's in them and then everyone put in their names next to their initial choice of an item, as I did here for Kallista.

So we have:

- Staff (Kallista)

I think the scrolls would be:

1 - Spellbook (as a single scroll with 7 spells on it)
2 - Augury
3 - Fireball
4 - Charm Person

Then at least 2 and maybe 4 potions

1 - Healing
2 - Healing
3 - ?
4 - ?

And then finally

Long Sword +1 "Talon"
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 19/12/15 12:50 UTC
Jaliera would be interested in spells and a potion.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 19/12/15 12:54 UTC
Also Jaliera has already agreed with her mentor to join the Zhentarim. smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 19/12/15 19:17 UTC
If you want my suggestion, we have 4 people interested in magic, Kallista, Davroar, Jaliera, and Kriv. Kallista would like the Staff.

I think we can take the spellbook, since it has 7 spells in it, and make that another choice. Then we can pair one of the scrolls with a potion of healing and make that 2 more choices. That makes 4. We'd have the two other potions left to offer to Chandan and then one scroll for someone to take.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 19/12/15 20:51 UTC
Kriv will stake a claim on the book, student that he is.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 20/12/15 11:38 UTC
Jaliera will bid for fireball and or charm person and a potion of healing. smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 20/12/15 18:01 UTC
Davroar? Any preference?
Posted By: Dugan Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 21/12/15 09:23 UTC
Davroar will taste test the two unknown potions. If either are simple healing spell he will let the others have them since he has healing spells, otherwise he will put a claim on them.

Davroar can't use a sword, so he would probably suggest gifting it to Sildar.

Being a druid, gold does not hold too much sway on him and will gift 200gp of it to Sildar to help restoring order or to recompense any relatives of the dead/missing families from the Redbrands actions.

I did ask in a ooc comment about the waterproof satchel. May Davroar keep that?
Posted By: nem Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 21/12/15 09:28 UTC
Chandan would be interested in any drinkables. grin Any coinage he himself found, he'd return to the town.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 21/12/15 12:23 UTC
No objection from Jaliera to Davroar taking the satchel. smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 21/12/15 18:57 UTC
None here either.

Dugan - Davroar isn't interested in any of the scrolls?

Neal - Chandan doesn't want any scrolls either?
Posted By: nem Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 21/12/15 21:07 UTC
Can Chandan use scrolls? He can read, but he's a monk.

Also, is the Staff of Defence a wizardly staff or a smash 'em in the face staff? (Or both, I guess.)

Chandan could do with an attack upgrade of some sort. He's OK at hitting, but his damage is on the low side.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 21/12/15 23:58 UTC
Anyone can use scrolls in D&D 5e. I posted that earlier. So they are available to anyone.

The Staff is a Wizardly staff. It can be used to hit with, like any staff, but it's powers are to cast defensive spells (Mage Armour and Shield) which requires you to have those spells in your spell list.
Posted By: Dugan Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 22/12/15 07:54 UTC
Davroar would have no interest in the scrolls as I am playing him as an illiterate barbarian (the only exception being taught Druidic).
Posted By: nem Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 22/12/15 10:24 UTC
Fascinating! I like that idea. Probably a good idea for all PCs to have some complementary scrolls in their possession. Having said that, Chandan will likely be first into the fray, so it might be better for Jaliera or Kallista to take the scrolls.

Potions are a good match for Chandan though.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 22/12/15 12:31 UTC
I assume that those who use magic can copy those scrolls and therefore have them as a permanent addition, whereas non-magic users get a one-off use? smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 22/12/15 21:17 UTC
If your class uses a spellbook you can copy a scroll into your spellbook. Many spellcasting classes do not use spellbooks (Kallista for example), so would do the reverse (i.e. use a spellbook as if it were a scroll).

If you have the PHB look up your class to see if it requires a spellbook or not. I believe the only class that uses a spellbook is Wizard. All other classes simply know a limited number of spells without requiring a book to write them down in.

So anyone can use the scrolls. If Davroar and Chandan aren't interested, and Kriv would like the spellbook as his choice, then it seems Jaliera gets first choice of the scrolls.

Why doesn't Jaliera take 2 scrolls and leave one for Kallista (any one of them are fine). We'll give Chandan any non-healing potion we've got and split the healing ones up among Jaliera, Chandan, and Davroar.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 22/12/15 22:08 UTC
Zeim is correct and yes, I'm using our house-rule about casting out of a spell book. But I'll stay out of this free-for-all unless you guys come to blows weg
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 23/12/15 10:39 UTC
OK, I'm good with my choices smile Thanks!
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 23/12/15 18:01 UTC
So Jaliera will take both Fireball and Charm Person and Kallista will take Augury?
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 23/12/15 18:02 UTC
Nep - somebody said they would test the unknown potions, or Kallista will.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 23/12/15 21:49 UTC
Sorry 'bout that.
The two potions are Healing and Invisibility.

Everyone should update their PC's.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 24/12/15 01:50 UTC
Probably planning on going shopping first.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 24/12/15 17:32 UTC
OK, so here is how I think it plays out:

Kallista - Staff of Defense, Scroll of Augury
Jaliera - Scroll of Fireball, Scroll of Charm Person, Potion of Healing
Kriv - Spellbook (7 spells)
Chandan - Potion of Invisibility, Potion of Healing
Davroar - Potion of Healing

Plus 247.1 gp each.

We also have a +1 Long Sword we are holding on to that no one chooses to use. Kallista is carrying it but will give it to anyone else who wants it.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 26/12/15 01:39 UTC
How much could we get for selling the long sword? Our front line relies on bigger weapons, no weapons and bearing respectively.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 26/12/15 02:59 UTC
Neptune's call, but my recollection is that selling magic items is not allowed. They give all sorts of reasons why in the DMG iirc.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 26/12/15 03:39 UTC
Reasonable. Can we sacrifice it to transfer its bonus somewhere useful?
Posted By: Exeter Re: OOC: Resources - Sat 26/12/15 15:21 UTC

Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 10/01/16 11:33 UTC
Neptune, I would rather go with the spirit taking an owl form as per D&D 5 if that's OK. Part of the reason that I made my choice of owl is that Jaliera can get it to change back to spirit which would protect it from physical harm is a really dicey situation. smile Part of our remit here is to try out the new system.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 10/01/16 17:16 UTC
Actually I think that's not the way it works, although the difference is effectively meaningless. smile

You can cause it to vanish into a Pocket Dimension to avoid danger, until you call it back. It doesn't really change form back into a spirit.

You can get it to change form, into a different animal, by recasting the spell.

That's the bit I meant, the Pocket Dimension! smile

Gypsy,
I guess Zeim knows me really well wink
We can call it anything we want but the powers remain the same. I'm just calling it an animal imbued with special properties. You can call it a spirit if you like.

Just a note for everyone. This week has, and will continue to be slow for me. I apologize but I'm booked in all-day meetings at work and have a bunch of evening plans. It'll pick back up this weekend.

What the "N" team can do (in OOC if you like) is discuss where you'll be heading next. The module is open like that. You can go here or there in any sequence or not at all. Look at the various potential missions in the N- News, Quests, Rumours, Leads, Persons & Items of Interest thread.

Yup, prioritizing Gundren is top of the agenda.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 14/01/16 14:59 UTC
I think the question was whether or not there were other options for finding clues to Gundren, besides the Druid. If not, then yes, Druid would be best choice. I am not sure we've explored all of our options in town yet.

Iirc the only other option was the wander the hills, hope we wander into orc bandits, can defeat them without killing them all, and persuade a captive to lead us to Gundren, assuming he knows. grin

Thundertree and the Druid seemed like a more reliable bet. angel

AJ/Neptune - I will not have time to refresh Jaliera's memories and look back over the old threads until Sunday at the earliest. Work is manic ATM. Sorry.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 16:09 UTC
Gypsy/AJ,
I am all for the discussion but was going to put a cap on it so that we can move forward with the game. I happen to be rather passionate about the subject and am interested in the discussion.

And I've been snickering to myself about alignments.
Chandan - Neutral Good
Jaliera - Neutral
Kriv - Lawful Evil

If asked, it feels like:

Chandan - Chaotic Neutral
Jaliera - Neutral Good
Kriv - Lawful Neutral

But I'm alright with how it's going because I've always felt that picking an alignment before the game starts is somewhat limiting when it comes to character development. As a player I usually want to feel out a game before picking an alignment niche.

Back to the matter at hand. Maybe I should create another thread for the Kriv-Jaliera discussion? This way I can proceed with the game and you can take your time to flesh out the discussion. What do you think?
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 16:18 UTC
Rest assured, Kriv is definitely evil. There's no charity, compassion, forgiveness or kindness anywhere to be found in his side of the dialogue. Although it is quite entertaining just how much he and Chandan have emerged as polar opposites, with Jaleira trying to find a point of balance between them.

Ongoing discussion to one side to let the game carry on is fine, I apologise for monopolizing things a bit.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 18:04 UTC
No worries. This topic is very interesting to me. For the longest time I've mulled over running an overly moral politically-correct game. It would have raised the point that Killing ANYONE would be a crime, even if the person that was killed had been murderers. That's much like today's society where cops come under fire for shooting someone they thought was threatening. It always seemed curious that wanton killing is accepted in the game.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 18:30 UTC
I'm OK with moving the main thread forward. smile

And yes, enjoying the discussion just very busy! grin

And alignments are open to interpretation. NGs don't for example stand by whilst prisoners are threatened/tortured for information.. at least IMO wink
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 18:43 UTC
I think Nep's point is that Jaliera isn't NG. She is N, but playing as NG.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 18:49 UTC
<shrug> I don't see it that way
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 19:35 UTC
Gypsy,
It's OK and just was my observation. Alignments are very subjective and there's a blurred border between differing alignments. I once had a "Lawful Good" player tell me that her character owned slaves. Slavery, IMO, is evil or neutral at best. So it's all subjective.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 19:50 UTC
I suspect there's relativity at play here. Jaliera isn't good, but she's considerably more good than Kriv. Kriv in turn is leaning heavily on the lawful aspect of his personality in this discussion because that's where Chandan's actions have earned the most ire: He hasn't done anything blatantly and obviously good, but he's certainly been extremely chaotic.
Posted By: nem Re: OOC: Resources - Wed 17/02/16 22:26 UTC
Chandan and Kriv are like Riggs and Murtaugh. They just need to crash a few cars and jump off some buildings together and they'll be best buddies.

I'm really enjoying the discussion too, since it's one of the things I've found most perculiar about the character. Neutral Good.

I interpret that as someone whose primary motivator is "Good", with Law or Chaos being a bit irrelevant. I think of it as being like Batman, but with more of a sense of responsibility for his actions. (I mean, how many innocent people have died because Batman keeps letting the Joker live? lol Yet Bats just never learns, he's almost complicit!)

I don't know whether I read the situation with the slavers correctly, but I'd just watched A Walk Amongst the Tombstones so decided the kidnappers must be very very bad people. grin

Reasoning behind surrender to goblins? Criminy! Was a while ago, but iirc the idea was to tie-up the 3 goblins by surrendering, thus drawing them away from the fight. I think he was at the back of the marching order, so couldn't climb up the chimney to join the battle with the bugbear unless the PCs at the top got bopped on the head. Something like that.

There are good and valid reasons for everything, and above all else, how you play Chandan is sacrosanct: Your character, your call. Kriv does not however like, respect, believe or trust him on the basis of witnessing his actions.

A better comparison would be Ian Duncan Smith and Banksy, a rich man born to privilege who applies the rules to everyone else no matter how much that hurts them despite his own sometimes questionable morality, up against a maverick impossible to pin down artist with a social conscience.

That, or Javert and Jean Valjean. weg

grin Hah yes, LMP = Les Mis: Phandelin? We have to make it happen! Kriv can't go throwing himself off a bridge yet though, we need his maul.

Imo it's good to have some inter-party conflict. (Political parties would probably disagree.) It creates drama and sometimes is thematically necessary.

Like in the Aliens game I ran, it was really necessary for the cohesion of the PCs to fray and come apart when the crisis hit. Wolf's grease monkey, Hunter, was disobeying Art in the Blood's commanding officer Salandra, and the sensible one, MikeD's science officer, Tomich, was largely ignored. Ah fun times! cool But of course, the films would've been extremely boring if the characters all kept their heads and worked seamlessly together.

Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 13/12/16 14:10 UTC
Hearing distance would be roughly 120 feet for shouting and 60 feet for normal conversation.

You are about 150 feet away in a straight line, though it is further for movement as you have to move around the trees and bushes.

Movement is 30 feet, but if you do not attack you can do a double move and move 60 feet.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 13/12/16 14:14 UTC
So, how many feet away taking the impassable terrain into account?
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 13/12/16 14:35 UTC
Each square on the map is 10 feet. It is about 150 feet from the front of the N party to melee range of the closest foe, following the yellow brick road on the map smile

So, translation, 2 rounds of running and then a melee attack on the third round.

Of course the situation is fluid, people move, dragon's fly, perhaps granting missile shots, spells have range, etc........ wink

I will begin the round today so we can get in as many actions as possible before I leave for NY Wed evening. I will be driving so out of touch for 2 days.

So Chadan is so high he is flying?

A question about potions. What is the point of saying a potion is unidentified, if just tasting it will tell you what it does? Are there cursed type potions, which are a gotcha for testing them? Just seems like an unnecessary element. For me, it seems it would just be easier to declare it up front and spend my energy for other fiction. I thought I would ask though, am I missing something?
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 16:42 UTC
Well ... unless things changed, not =anyone= can identify a potion.

And yes, it should be possible to 'poison' a potion ... in the same way it is possible to have a 'cursed' magic item <g>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 17:03 UTC
Pande - It is a good question. Here is the quote from the DMG on this topic:

The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an
item's properties. Alternatively, a character can focus
on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the
character learns the item's properties, as well as how
to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is
enough to tell the taster what the potion does.

So your point is valid. If all you need to do is taste, then why is tasting required? I cannot answer without more research, other than to guess it is a hold-over from earlier versions. As I recall the "proverbial sip" of a potion to identify it has always been a requirements in every version of D&D.

In addition MikeD's comment is valid. It could be a vial of Poison, or a Cursed Potion. The safest way to tell is to cast Identify (or have an identify Magic Item ability). Were it a Cursed Potion, as a DM, I would likely have part of the curse be that once you take a sip you are required to drink the whole thing. Were it poison, you might take 1 or 2 points of damage and be under the Poison effect for a short period of time.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 17:50 UTC
Well ... as GM ... you can decide <wink>

But a 'sniff and a lick' can tell a lot to someone who knows potions <g>
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 18:45 UTC
Another question. I am considering one of two feats, if I don't take Sorceror/Warlock as my next level. IE if I take Paladin 4.

As a Paladin Luminmorn is trained in All armor and all shields. I assume that doesn't mean he has Heavily Armored as a feat, which is too bad, because I was considering Heavy Armor Master, but not eligible if he doesn't have the equivalent prerequisites.

So I guess if I am right above, I am down to the 2 points for the attribute bump, which I am assuming is only 1 per attribute. I will have to go look how that works.

Or Inspiring Leader. Not sure 7 temp hp to 6 people is worth it. But since we won't be going too much further, no real need to plan ahead. wink
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 18:58 UTC
Pande - A couple of things. First, as a Paladin you are Proficient in ALL armour (which includes heavy Armour), so you qualify for the Heavy Armour Master Feat. The pre-req for that is not having the Heavy Armour Feat but simply that you are proficient in Heavy Armour. It also requires that you are wearing Heavy Armour (Ring Mail, Splint Mail, Chain Mail, or Plate) to get the benefit.

Second, if you choose the points instead you can assign them however you like, including 2 points to a single stat.

Note, though, that if you take the Feat, even though it includes increasing your Str by 1 point, bumping your strength up by a single point to 17 doesn't grant you any extra benefit so it would be only the Feat bonuses to compare to increasing a single stat by 2.

Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 19:01 UTC
Let me clue everyone in on some "feats" vs "points" issues. In our FTF game NOBODY has ever taken a feat. The 2 point stat bumps seem universally better. I considered some feats for my 14th level version of Lingo but never pulled the trigger.

You are absolutely allowed to bump 1 stat 2 points.

Luminmorn is already proficient in heavy armor so it doesn't help him.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 19:03 UTC
Heavy Armour Master would give him benefits, you are correct that Heavily Armoured would not.

But Nep is correct. No one in our game even considered taking Feats until they at least bumped their Primary Stat up to 20.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 20:02 UTC
Lumi has even numbers in all his stats so the 2 point bump is more valuable, I believe.

The damage reduction has value at low levels but becomes a regrettable choice later.
Posted By: nem Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 20:09 UTC
Yes, I think feats are too situational in 5e to rival ability score increases.

There are some exceptions that might rival them but are still lower priority.

Take a monk, frex, the Mobile feat allows him to engage and disengage from enemies without incuring Attacks of Opportunity. Pretty useful for a monk, who have a high movement rate and multiple attacks.

But is it better than a Dex mod increase +1? For a monk that's always applied to AC, hit and damage rolls, initiative, saving throws, and skills.

And after you've increased Dex to 20, what about Wis mod? Also applies to monk AC, DC of their special abilities, and saving throws and skills.

As standard, monks can spend Ki to disengage without provoking AoO, and how useful is it to run through a battle, slapping multiple enemies? Better to focus on one at a time maybe?

With sufficient room to manouevre, there might be occasions when Mobile feat allowed you to move into range, slap an enemy, then move back out of range. But then who is that enemy going to attack? One of your companions, most likely, possibly flanking them too.

So 'The Best Feat for Monks' ends up being a long way behind ability score increases in terms of usefulness.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 20:13 UTC
Same goes for multi-classing. With the real benefits of a class coming at 3rd level, it diminishes the benefit. The trick is to find stat synergy. For a paladin, the only multi-classing I see as reasonable is bard. Gain inspiration and spells, leverage that charisma.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 20:26 UTC
What about Sorcerer or Warlock? Both use Cha as their main as well?

The munchkin element in this is simply that add a spell caster class that allows multiple level 1 spells. That allows for more opportunities to add 2d6 radiant damage from more Smites.

For the non munchkin element, it plays into the long term character creation idea of him becoming a gardian dragon of the wood kind of a character. Druid would probably fit better, but doesn't leverage the Cha benefits that are already built in, plus we have a druid in the extended group now. Heck we might even have another Paladin, though I don't think so.

In short it varies the tools the character brings to the table. Is that necessary? Not really. Is it kinda cool? Possibly? Is it frustrating? Possibly?

Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 20:27 UTC
And we saw a Paladin/Warlock multi-class at Gencon that synergized fairly well too.

Best Feats, IMO, are "Alert", "Defensive Duelist", "Elemental Adept", "Great Weapon Master", "Lucky", "Martial Adept", Observant", "Polearm Master", "Savage Attacker", "Sentinel", "Shield Master", "Tough", and "War Caster".

Some of these are situational, and some aren't useful for certain classes who already get those benefits as part of their class.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 20:32 UTC
Alert is on the short list as well.

Though because both Strength and Charisma are 16 the 2 point stat bump might be the real ticket. As noted in the discussion by you guys who have had a lot more time playing it, +1 (5%) bonus in a lot of things is pretty darn nice.

I also considered Shield Master because Talon could be used one handed. It takes away from his damage potential, but that can be fixed by a few well placed Smites. It would also make him tougher to hit, but a fair amount.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 20:50 UTC
...and it has the benefit of giving you a +2 (or more) to all your magic Dex saves against spells that target only you, AND even better, if you are subject to an effect that allows you a Dex save for 1/2 damage you can use your Reaction and if you save you take no damage. Rogues already get a version of this feature (Evasion) so it doesn't help them, but it is great for others.

Still, everyone in our game thought the Stat bump was better. We didn't really start considering Feats until 12th level.

Yes, and it is unlikely we will play to 12th level, so picking something for shorter utility, and more flavor is probably a better choice.

I am sure that ... when you get to that level ... the choice between stat bumps and feats is not so clear. But at this level, it seems to me that 'stats are king' <g>

But that might just be me <wink>
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 16/01/17 22:57 UTC
Yes, unfortunately, to avoid duplicates, I have eliminated the doubled magic items, so the +1 LS that Kallista had and the Staff of Defense that Balthazar had did not survive the Dragon attack. There's only one of each, Luminmorn has Talon and Kriv (?) has the Staff of Defense.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 17/01/17 03:29 UTC
Probably Kriv unless and until someone puts forward a better claim, given Eldritch Knight shenanigans.
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Tue 17/01/17 14:46 UTC
It's actually a very good use of it, AJ. You get to use the Mage Armour every day on somebody, get to have the +1 AC and the Shield spell Reaction for at least the first round of combat before your turn, and then can stash it away for your normal weapon. The only loss is a continual +1 AC and continual ability to use the Shield Reaction. But the only class that really works for is one that does nothing but cast spells and can afford to hold onto the staff all the time and not need to hold another weapon, and at the moment you don't have any of those.
Posted By: AJ Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 19/01/17 17:10 UTC
Question on the Great Weapon Master feat. It gives a bonus attack on either a crit or dropping the target to zero on your turn with a melee attack. If that bonus attack also crits or drops its target, does the feat trigger again?
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Thu 19/01/17 18:50 UTC
No, because it allows you to make that attack as a "Bonus Action". You only get 1 Bonus Action on your turn, so even if you did kill a creature with the extra attack and received another Bonus Action, you would not be allowed to use it.

BTW, Warlocks don't use Spellbooks, nor do they memorize spells. They just have a list of spells they know and they can cast any of them, at any time, up to their allowable Spell slots.

They also recover ALL of the spell slots at every short rest (which makes up for the fact they get so few slots).

You can certainly scout the entire castle using any means you like taking all the necessary precautions and assuming all the possible risks smile I gave you the "far distance" description so as to not lead anyone by the nose-ring.

You can assume at least 40' of clearing with little cover as you approach the castle from any side. But I'll provide such details as you take action. The rest plays out in character.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 03/04/17 16:03 UTC
There are lots of questions that a "readied" action raises. As a reaction, you lose your reaction. They must be regular actions so that does not include bonus actions, but you can use a "move" as the reaction: "I run away if I hear a noise" as an example.

Here's the text from the PHB (actually, one of the SRDs):

Quote:

"Sometimes you want to get the jump on a foe or wait for a particular circumstance before you act. To do so, you can take the Ready action on your turn, which lets you act using your reaction before the start of your next turn.

First, you decide what perceivable circumstance will trigger your reaction. Then, you choose the action you will take in response to that trigger, or you choose to move up to your speed in response to it. Examples include "If the cultist steps on the trapdoor, I'll pull the lever that opens it," and "If the goblin steps next to me, I move away."

When the trigger occurs, you can either take your reaction right after the trigger finishes or ignore the trigger. Remember that you can take only one reaction per round.

When you ready a spell, you cast it as normal but hold its energy, which you release with your reaction when the trigger occurs. To be readied, a spell must have a casting time of 1 action, and holding onto the spell's magic requires concentration. If your concentration is broken, the spell dissipates without taking effect. For example, if you are concentrating on the web spell and ready magic missile, your web spell ends, and if you take damage before you release magic missile with your reaction, your concentration might be broken."

As a reaction, the triggered action goes AFTER the trigger occurs. The only way this makes sense is that if a goblin peers around the corner, the trigger for Jaliera is the "move" portion of the goblin's action which means she gets her reaction BEFORE the goblin fires.

Even though the text calls for it "per round". The round for Jaliera is from her turn in round 1 until her turn comes up again in round 2.

But what if the goblins have readied actions? You all saw 3 goblins. They took a turn and fired, it wasn't a reaction to Kriv's breaking down the door. They hadn't gone yet and took their actions (note: Goblins get a bonus action to hide). But other goblins might be lurking that DIDN'T go. They might all have readied bows for when they see you. So, what's good for the goose, is good for the gander, right? That means that Chandan could summersault through the door and look for someone to attack, but the goblins with readied actions will get to shoot BEFORE he gets his attack.

There's lots of discussion about "readied action" on the Internet because it can be confusing. I figure that this is a good time to lay out how I interpret things - right or wrong.

And my attitude is that as long as I'm consistent, it's all good.

Oh, one more thing. Zeim said: "and you can't change your mind, or you lose your turn."

Since it's a reaction, if you get the chance to use an opportunity attack, you can until you use your reaction. So, you can forego your reaction for the opportunity attack. You don't get both.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 03/04/17 16:14 UTC

Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 03/04/17 17:22 UTC
Not really. It's actually simpler, which is why it seems more complicated. Of course smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 03/04/17 17:44 UTC
Yes. In the past you had people delaying their turns and the DM had to constantly check with everyone if they wanted to jump back in to the initiative order or not, which led to a confusing round as people would always interrupt the DM with requests to go, and questions about whether they went already or not and what they wanted to do.

This way you declare your intent and the DM decides when your action occurs.
Posted By: Neptune Re: OOC: Resources - Mon 03/04/17 19:34 UTC
Plus it's limiting. You don't get your entire move. You just get the one action. And it makes a lot more sense.

Would opening the door constitute the 'move' portion of the Goblin's action, allowing the reaction contingent on it to take place before the attack portion of the goblin's action, or am I missing something?

Note that while Davroar's spell will most likely set the door aflame, it is not likely to burn it down in 1 minute. It is more likely to take 10 minutes or more of burning to weaken it enough that you can easily knock it down. So it could work to get you through the door, but Davroar won't have the Flaming Sphere available to roll into the room.

I'd also revise what I said earlier to Chandan. Given 10 minutes to allow for Davroar's Flaming Sphere to burn down the door, you possibly could create a hole in the rubble large enough to pass through. It would take repeated use of the Elemental Attunement effect (at least 10), and you'd need to focus on a specific spot (and let me know where).

Lastly, note that there is also a door to the west in the hall. It is roughly across from the eastern door. Davroar's spell could probably last long enough to get both doors burning on their own before it expires.

I need everyone to place themselves on the map in Roll20 where they want to be standing when Davroar casts his spell.

Oil on the door or other accelerant before he casts his spell? The attunement of elements for fire, and firebolts all combined?

While Eldritch Blast is not fire, it could be added to hammer the door down more quickly as well.
Posted By: MikeD Re: OOC: Resources - Fri 09/06/17 17:34 UTC
How about ... we set the east door on fire ... that would give us 10 min to go through the west door and then be ready when the door burns through <weg>

With oil and some other Fire spells you might be able to cut the time in half. These are thick oak doors re-enforced with iron bands. It is going to take time for them to burn enough to weaken them.

Bottom line is you could burn your way thru, but the Flaming Sphere will be long gone by the time you do. And the corridor will be filled with smoke. Vision will be reduced to 10 feet, which could work in your favor or against you, depending.

I am not saying it is a bad plan, it has it's good points, and might be the best option, but it also has consequences.

If you want to try to simply bash your way thru, it is a DC 15 Strength Check to open one.

Vision reduced helps when we're dealing with ambush snipers: They can't shoot what they can't see. The psychological impact of the door burning also helps, especially if they're planning to pincushion any lump of muscle that barges its way in.

As I said, just place yourselves where you want to be when Davroar casts his spell.

Actually ... here is another idea to consider based on the door bust DC Zeim mentioned. Zeim, is there a way to 'work together' to get any kind of bonus? Bern needs an 11 on the roll to get through, I think others might have it easier. But if we can 'work together', can we 'improve the odds'??

If we can get a decent chance to get through the door, Davroar is ready with the flame sphere, but doesn't have to waste it on the door, just the goblins <g>

But, again, that leaves possible enemies behind the western door.

I'm moving Davroar on the map to be in position for him to cast his spell

Assuming that we are barging the door and then rolling in the ball of fire.. ie so Jaliera will still be able to see the corridor without all the smoke, then I have positioned her to watch down the length of the corridor but still be in a good position to cover the east door if needed. Whisper will be watching the west door. Do you need stealth and or perception?

MikeD - If another pc "helps" you you get to roll with advantage.

Thanks. AJ, I am +4 on the str check, do you wanna take the lead, or should I?

Snipers. Very dangerous. You go first.

Ummmm was that supposed to be an answer to my question AJ? If so, I don't get it <sigh>

It sounded suspiciously like a quote from Raiders of The Lost Ark

Vipers... Very dangerous. You go first.

Ahhhh ... OK ... so my +4 is the best we got, I get it ... =now= <g>

OK ...

<mounting soapbox>
so that has got to be the 5th ed 'arbitrary rule change' that I dislike more than all the other 'arbitrary rule changes' combined! <sigh> I will never understand why ... as a living, thinking being ... my character cannot choose to wait a moment for another character (or foe) to ... cast the spell, fire an arrow, etc. before 'acting' <sigh>
<dismounting soapbox>

Maybe it is just as well that I am not working GenCon where I would be running 5th ed <wink>

As it was explained to me it was to make life easier for the DM. In the past, when you could always delay, you would get into situations where multiple people would delay and the DM had to check with every player after every single action took place: "...are you ready to jump in yet? How about you? You?...." The initiative order became a mess and it could be very hard for the DM to run a combat.

But I really don't like it much either.

I have edited the post in the thread to start the melee.

Actually, it wasn't really that hard. You just need the right tool for the job! ... in this case 3x5 cards <g>

In case this is a new 'mechanism' for our readers <weg> ... Each player fills out a card for their character. At a minimum you need the character's name and init mod (to resolve ties).

I had cards for the monsters as appropriate based on how the mod was written. Sometimes there was a card for each monster ... other times a 'swarm' of goblins, for example, would get one init for the group. So I could have all the monster's cards, init rolls done and ready before the game started. The players would roll init for each encounter and put that on their card. I would sort the stack of cards in init order and combat would begin. The top card would get to take their action and then go to the bottom of the stack, rinse and repeat until the combat was complete.

When someone said the wanted to delay or ready, their card went 'sideways'. It was =THEIR= responsibility to pay attention to the action and say that they were ready to 'jump back in'. At that point their card was put on top and they took their action. And that was their new place in the rotation. I =would= ask if they wanted to change/do something else if their 'sideways' card came back to the top of the stack. Easy Peasy <wink>

I used that system for years and it works really well ... in f2f games <weg> I am not sure it would work as well here <sigh>

Question: As I had Whisper watching the door to the NE, can three goblins really open a door, move through it, assess the situation, fire and then hide. Seems an awful lot considering Whisper couldn't warn Jaliera and she might have side-stepped.

I don't begrudge the damage grin just trying to understand the rules. Cheers!

First, the Hobgoblins were watching thru a spyhole and listening so knew what was going on. They were waiting for the right moment to come in. Second, in general yes, you can open a door, move thru it, assess what is on the other side, and get an attack in the same round. That is a:

Free Action: Open the door
Move action: Enter the room
Action: Attack

and if you have an ability to get a Bonus action to Hide, as the Goblins do (and as Jaliera also does), you can also take that.

The only way Jaliera could have done anything to intervene would have been for her to take a "Ready" Action (instead of shooting last round) and to have said "I am watching the North and if anything comes thru I will attack it".

Her other option would be to Hide every single round (which is a fairly normal Rogue tactic). In that case, unless she rolled poorly the enemies would not have seen her and would have targeted somebody else. If you added the Hide for Jaliera with the Readied Action she'd have gotten her Sneak Dice as well.

Which reminds me. She really should be using her Bonus Action to hide every round. As long as she is successful she gets to attack with Advantage and gets a Sneak Attack on every round and gets to add 2d6 to her damage roll 1/round. She also gets this extra damage (even if she doesn't hide) if she attacks an enemy who is adjacent to one of her allies.

OK, understood.. and doh! Keep forgetting her hide! grin Thanks! smile
Posted By: Gypsy Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 02/07/17 08:54 UTC
Trying to work out what to roll. I am thinking Perception to see them, attack/damage if successful, stealth to hide? She can ready an action as she has Whisper spotting for her. smile Or do I do a stealth first? Cheers! smile
Posted By: Zeim Re: OOC: Resources - Sun 02/07/17 13:39 UTC
It's as I wrote in the in-game thread. If your Passive Perception is higher than the number I rolled for them to hide, you can see them and attack.

Otherwise, it takes an action to make an Active Perception roll to look for them, so even if you find them, you can't attack as you used your action to find them (unless you have an attack that only uses a Bonus Action).

The best thing to do with Goblins is to Ready an Action and wait for them to pop up out of hiding to attack, at which point you automatically see tham and can attack, OR to use some AOE action that will impact them even where they hide.

And yes, on your turn you should remember to always do a Bonus Action and make a Stealth roll to hide.

All,

This is where I'll be taking over again. It won't be until after this weekend because I've got to prep for a face-to-face game. Zeim and I split duties there too. He's taking over for me with our FTF pals and I'm taking over here. I need to do some reading to catch up a bit but I have a good handle on where you are and what you've accomplished. Keep posting in the current thread. Zeim will shepherd you for a few more days.
