[OOC: I had Ryssa back by the dwarf but you said that you are moving, and moving fast. So I'll put you at the top of the rope so that you can start climbing down soon. I'll also moved Jaliera closer so that you're all in the light. You'll all need to decide who climbs down first, if climbing down is what you want to do. Note that the flying stirges are tiny size, like Whisper. Note that it takes 2 rounds for one person to climb down the rope.]

"Rope might be slimy if it been here a few days." He remarks to Kriv and Bern following him in the uncontrolled descent.

Then hears the cacophony of stirges; Jaliera's owl went that way. Chandan leaves the torch where it is. They can use Kriv's light to investigate and rescue the owl if need be.

The party hears Jaliera's warning and mobilizes into action! Her owl companion is in trouble as it's being attacked by blood-sucking stirges.


I rolled initiative for Exeter because he may or may not be available for the next few days/weeks. Something to do with gall stones. Anyhow, I rolled well for Ryssa and she goes first. I'll give Exeter a bit of time but not too much. I don't want to hold up the game too much. Kriv and Chandan go next. BTW, the stirges are flying off of the ceiling. Until the close on you, they'll be out of melee range and look at the range of the light. You see only a few of them unless you have darkvision.

Standing at the top of the rope, Ryssa peered downward, knowing that it would take her too long to climb down the rope with the stirges attacking the group.

The cleric murmured a prayer and cast a minor offensive spell at the first stirge to come into her line of sight.

He shrugged off any trace of impediment from the fall and advanced, brandishing the illuminating staff to try and give the others a better sight of the Stirge threat Jaliera had alerted them to. He snapped off a fire bolt with a brief word and a flourish of the staff at the Stirge nearest to Jaliera's familiar.

Ryssa reacts quickly to Jaliera's alert and calls for flames to protect the owl, as best they can. She sees one of the tiny parasites in the dim light shed by the flickering flame that Kriv carries and it perishes in a puff of fire and holy smoke.

Kriv moves forward and aims an arcane bolt of fire at another stirge that was barely visible around a corner, but with his terrific aim he blasts it from existance.

ooc: This is for everyone. Ryssa can cast her spell and then move. She'll have climbed down 15 of the 20 feet with a speed of 30. Next turn she'll need to use 10' of her move to finish the climb and will then have a move of 20' left over, and her normal action. So, she can climb down. But here's a hint: The bloodthirsty stirges don't need to climb to poke their pointy noses into your business wink

Stirge dex save vs sacred flame DC 14
Neptune rolled 1d20+3 and got 8 - Fails, dies.

Kriv's 21 hits even though the stirge gets a +5 to AC for 75% cover.

Jaliera's owl has been a willing and selfless ally to the party, and Chandan repays that trust as best he can.

Flailing his raggedy robes, he charges into the dimly-lit tunnel and attacks the stirges with spear and gnarly old foot.

[Godammit, just rolled a nat 20 and two 6s on damage. Against a stirge with 2 hp. hmm

Chandan hits a stirge for 16 damage.]

Chandan runs in to help Whisper and confronts and needs to make an amazing leaping attack to fly at one of the flying stirges. He tries to put himself between the owl and the rest of stirges, and there were many of them emerging from the high cavern ceiling and the darkness beyond his vision, but he can't stop them all. Some are flying above his reach and past his reach. Two attack Whisper. Both hit. By the time they are done, Whisper perishes and simply disappears.

When Chandan arrived on the scene, the stirges swarmed him, the smell of the bag of blood being too much to resist. Six attack him and he's only able to fend off one of them. They immediately draw blood from the monk and his skin turns ashen. With their razor sharp proboscises buried deep into his flesh, they are likely to finish draining him of blood on their next drink.

Kriv's light drew those that couldn't find a space around Chandan to drink and three reached him and attacked. Two of them found an opening in his defenses and dug their needle noses into him and began draining the dragonborn of his blood too.

ooc: I'll make the assumption that even though the stirges were flying, Chandan hit one in the air above to use a terrific high kick or punch to kill one. That Nat 20 made it easy wink

About the 5e version of the spell Find Familiar: "When the familiar drops to 0 hit points, it disappears, leaving behind no physical formo It reappears after you cast this spell again." So, Whisper's just a casting away.

Second, some general features of this area which will apply everywhere unless otherwise noted:
Tunnels (straight edged corridors) have 10' high ceilings
Rooms have 20' high ceilings
Caverns (the stirges emerge from one) have 30' high ceilings

If a stirge is too high to be hit by a melee attack, he'll have a pink dot designation. That means it's elevation is 10' or higher. If a stirge is attached to a character, it'll have a blue dot designation.

Stepping up to get a better look down the tunnel he will cast Wind Wall, starting against the wall to Kriv's left, arcing in front of him and then down the line of approaching Stirges and ending up looping around Chandan. While the wall can only go up to 15 feet he hopes that the higher altitude Stirges will run into it when they descend to attack.

[ooc: I drew a blue line in D20 screen to show where I would like the wind wall to appear. Not sure if it will stay when I exit the game. ]

With the immediate problem of the stirges reduced, he takes the rope in hand. He had thought he might have to jump, but this seemed to be the safer, if slower, way.
