He will stop and carefully look down a few of the sinkholes to see if all of them are around the same depth and if there is any water at the bottom. He thinks it must be a local natural phenomena with the soil and the level of the water table here.

The oddity of the sinkholes and dirt mounds brings some attention, but none in the group can figure out what it might mean. Suddenly, with no warning, there is a rumbling in the ground and a moment later the earth erupts beneath your feet. A vicious looking beast emerges, directly beneath you, it razor sharp jaws opened wide as it attacks.
It's choice is the Monk, Chandan. Luckily for him, but unluckily for his Ass, the vicious jaws close around the beast, snapping it in half. It's hind-section disappears into the blood stained maw of the monster, it's head and shoulders toppling to one side as the Ass gives a screaming cry and dies.
Chandan can roll a Dex Save to avoid falling prone as his Ass is consumed from beneath him, and everyone needs to roll for Initiative.
The Bulette is currently in the midst of the group, having emerged from below ground, so everyone is adjacent to it, meaning everyone can attack it in melee but if anyone wishes to move away they must use Magic, use the Disengage Action, or offer an Opportunity Attack. Remember if you attack with a Ranged attack while a foe is adjacent to you, you attack with Disadvantage.

The ass's hindquarters are sliced off by the plated monster and the monk is lobbed into the air. Flailing his arms in apparent panic, Chandan somehow lands deftly on the balls of his feet and maintains his balance.
The bulette gulps down its prey, blood splashing from its cavernous mouth. Chandan's eyes boggle.
"It killed Butcho!" He gasps, then scowls at the monster, "You bastard!"
His spear thrust glances off the bulette's natural armour, but that's just a distraction from Chandan's main attack as he draws on the elemental forces of the Apa-dhatu, swirling blue-green energy forming around his fist. With a loud shout, he unleashes a turbulent jet of cold, cutting water.
[=7 to hit on spear attack. Miss. Meh! =37 on Water Whip damage. Bulette must make Dex save vs 13 to take half damage and avoid being knocked prone]
She had only just asked her question when the ground erupted. It was almost as if she summoned it! What a fearsome looking creature, looks armoured too. It takes no time at all to realise her bow is not the best choice here. So magic or the new sword? She is not sure that her magic will be so effective here, even a scroll as it is in the middle of everyone, so she draws the sword ready to attack.

[OOC I rolled for Whisper too, just in case she is around but Jaliera would warn her off anyway. If she can gain a flanking position, she will try a sneak attack.]
(OOC - Gypsy - One of the best uses of a familiar in combat situations, other than the fact that it can deliver touch spells for you, is it can use the "Help Another" Combat action to distract a foe, as long as the foe is adjacent to you. IOW if you have Whisper dive at the enemy it provides you with Advantage on your attack roll. So, in effect you can always attack in melee with advantage. It doesn't work for Ranged attacks. A small risk, of course, that the foe targets Whisper with it's attack, but generally unlikely.)
Chandan reacts immediately to having his beloved Ass eaten, and while his spear strike glances off the armour of the beast he calls on the elemental forces he has learned to command and strikes the monster a strong blow.
The Bulette turns, it's maw opening wide, and it bites at Chandan, but the teeth merely graze the agile monk (missed by 1).
(OOC - OK, Neptune will pick this up from here running theatre of the mind. Fairly easy to do without a map. Everyone in the party is effectively in a circle all adjacent to the Bulette. It is everyone else's turn now, so you can act, though if you do something magically to change the situation you may want to go in order.)

Her eyes widened at the sight of the monster and the sudden, violent death of the ass and Ryssa muttered an imprecation to her deity, Lathander. For just a second, she considered switching to her bow, but she did not want to give up the protection of her shield and, since she had no offensive spells memorized, she attacked with her dagger, but the blade just skittered off the bulette's armor.
The creature's deadly attack just shows how dangerous it is, so he quickly shifts into his strongest form as a grizzly and lashes out with his claws and bite.

So the land shark slips loose of his Pummelling Water Whip, and chomps at the monk. No natural creature this, but a monstrosity spawned from dark arcane experiments, so it is said.
Chandan dodges the bite, feeling the air buffeted by the bulette's massive mouthful. He gets a close look at its face, far too close for his sober state--- Staring into its ruby red eye, he sees no hatred, no ambition or cruelty, simply hunger. Wanton destruction. Is that evil, regardless of motive??
A question for another time. Chandan thrusts with a spear a second time, aiming for its eye, then following with a jumping knee to the bulette's jaw.

In an instant, the staff was falling from his fingers, his maul teleporting in to replace it with the merest effort of will. He swung hard and with remarkable swiftness, but the weapon glanced off the beast's hide this time around.

He was surprised by the huge creature's appearance. He would chastise himself, but no time for that. Instead he pulls the new rusty battle axe out and swings at the thing. As he pulled the axe through the air, he called the growing power of The Great Dragon, and channeled that energy into the strike.
19 to hit, 16 damage Luminmorn Attack, damage, smite Pandemonium rolled 1d20+6,1d8+4,2d8 and got 19, 7, 9 Expended a level 1 spell slot for Smite.

{OOC Didn't realise that Whisper could distract. I'll bear that in mind for future rounds. So can Jaliera sneak attack? It seems to suggest so as other enemies are within 5 feet - Chandan for example I'll roll the damage anyway.]

She aims for what looks like a gap in the carapace knowing that it is strongly armoured and she needs to find a weak spot. She feels the rapier slide into flesh.
The newly formed party attacks the land shark with all that they have. This is a creature unlike any they had faced before. They pummel and slash at the monstrosity with fury and nearly bring it down...but they don't. Deeply wounded and now angry, it goes after the black bear [ooc: there's no stats for a grizzly bear that I can find anywhere. Davroar can transform into a 1/2 HD creature and that's a black bear AC 11, HP 19.]. The bullette bites Davroar and it's razor sharp teeth dig deep into the druid's chest. Davroar drops to the ground, convulses and then stops moving. He transforms back into human form and stands up. Such is the way with druids. When they transform into animal form and that animal is killed, they revert back into human form. The Bullette, gravely wounded dives into the ground, moving at an astonishing pace into the dirt and disappears...for the moment.

OOC: Yes. Whisper can "distract" but is also a target when she does. Any time that an ally is adjacent to a target, you get to do a sneak attack. In fact, I just read a complaint in the D&D Facebook page where a DM was whining about how difficult it was to avoid a rogue sneak damage. Only in rare cases would you NOT get sneak damage. At a higher level you can use your mage hand to distract and get that damage.
