With the dead buried and the treasure distributed (please make sure you add new items to your sheets) the group decides to head directly to Cragmaw Castle to try to find Gundren.

Both groups, independently, have discovered the location of the Castle, and comparing notes they are relieved to find the information each group has agrees with the other, making it less likely they were given a false location. (See overland map)

It is roughly 30-35 miles from the ruins of Thundertree to Cragmaw Castle, about 2 days travel overland. Time for bonding, sharing information, and making tentative plans.

(OOC - Please provide a marching order, standard 2 persons per rank)

Chandan

As appropriate for an ass, Butch brings up the rear, burdened with his new keeper, the Yehimal Mountain Monk, Chandan.

One disadvantage to a direct route to Cragmaw Castle is the lack of resupply, attested to by the many gourds and skins that regale Butch; all notably empty and dry sounding.

So Chandan's mood is not as effervescent as it is when drinking, but after half a day's ride his hang-over subsides and he regains some of his mindful, good natured composure.

Although Common was not his native tongue, Chandan could hold a conversation. His casual speech was poor, broken and heavily accented, but if concentrating on making himself understood, he could speak perfectly well, if a little stilted and old fashioned.

He could elaborate at length about his life in the World Pillar Mountains, far to the east, his early days spent at a mountainside monastery, then hermitage, and his formal duties performing sky burials.

He could talk about giants and their ways, the martial arts they handed down and the mastery of the Five Elements.

Though Chandan doesn't talk much about his life since leaving the mountain, he can give a rough account of his, Davroar, Jaliera, Kriv, Kallista and Karok's service in aid of Gundren.

He's most eager to learn more about his new companions and what it is they do and why.

"Unless someone familiar with the route wants to lead, I can scout the way", he offered.

"I don't think any of us are truly familiar with the route, but you do raise a valid point. To mesh the way our groups operate, it will be necessary to know what we are all capable of. Jaliera has been our main scout to this point, for example. My own studies in the martial and arcane arts grant me a degree of flexibility, but I prefer a position closer to the van, the better to act when necessary. Davroar has been known to offer to scout ahead in innocuous animal forms on occasion, as well."

He glanced back to the mule laden with empty gourds, that still faintly reeked of their erstwhile alcoholic contents.

"Chandan... is best served by being downwind when scouting discreetly is called for.."

Chandan

His memory of the journey north from Phandalin is blurry, but he does remember the map they perused in the tavern some time ago.

So Chandan is confident in saying that this leg of their adventure will take them across open grassland, possibly skirting the edge of Neverwinter Wood's southern tract.

He shares this information, and though it's likely of little use to a scout, at least it might focus everyone's mind on the journey ahead, rather than the losses of Thundertree. And with level terrain and a landmark to follow, it promises to be easy-going, barring any encounters or inclement weather.

"Whisper has also scouted ahead for us. But.."

She smiles at Bern.

"Maybe we should share the task? That way we can spend time with the others and maybe stay more alert whilst scouting?"

She glances at Kriv.

"Kriv makes a good point. The better we know each other's capabilities, the easier it will be to work effectively together. So Whisper can do what an owl does but she and I can maintain a communication within certain distances and I can watch through her eyes. This means I can see in the dark when I do so. For myself I am learning to be an explorer and adventurer. I use a bow, a sword and I can also use some spells: Mage Hand, Light, Ray of Frost, Color Spray, Sleep and I have just learned Charm Person and Disguise Self. I can also find and disarm traps. I can move quickly, quietly and know some history. I have sharp eyes and am good at investigating. Oh and I speak a number of other languages. I hope these things might be useful to us. And I am happy to answer any questions you might have."

By the time she is finished she has a faint blush on her face. She finds it a little uneasy being so open with people she doesn't know... and a few months ago would never have opened her mouth. But she has a quiet courage and reasons that if she wants to learn about others, she has to be forthcoming about herself too. At the end, she looks to Davroar for some reassurance.

He would have rather not waste time standing around for this, but apparently he was alone in that desire.

"In a fight, I prefer my bow, but can use this", he tapped the hilt of his rapier, "when the need arises. I know a =bit= of magic, am most comfortable in the wilderness."

Ryssa

The cleric smiled and nodded acknowledgment of Jaliera's exposition of her abilities.

"You are most talented," she said in response.

"I am, first and foremost, a healer in the service of Lathander with some skill in the use of short bow and dagger."

Davroar

Walking alongside Jaliera he gives her an impressed look after hearing what she is capable of. She has surprised him too, thinking for the most part she was just an excellent thief-type of a woman.

Looking at their new found cleric with some relief, he says, "Good to have you along Ryssa. I have some healing spells, but nothing compared to what you probably got. As Kriv said, I'm better off using my animal forms to help in combat or for scouting."

Turning his attention outwards, he waves his hands in a broad gesture to add, "I even tried to get a message to a local druid that was rumored to be around here, but nothing came of it. Have any of you seen of him or her?"

Davroar knows druids can be quite reclusive and his question is asked with a rather resigned tone.

"Maybe he was the green dragon?" Offers the monk, knowing very little about dragonkind beyond the fables he'd heard.

"Yes, we met your druid friend," Ryssa said with a smile. She pointed back to the southwest.

"He was in a small house back that way. He told us about the dragon and that is what started us on our way toward attacking it."

[OOC: nemarsde, I went back and found where you did the split of the dragon loot and wondered why Ryssa was left out? smile ]

[Ah yes, sorry Exeter, I see the mistake. Where it says "Lu" it should read "Ryssa". (Luminmorm got the scroll, which is worth a hundred odd gp according to the DMG.) I've corrected it, see link below.

[OOC And did Jaliera get the sword, the staff is not really her thing? Just so I can update her sheet. smile ]

Jaliera

As Ryssa compliments her she goes a deeper shade of red but is then distracted by Whisper flying in to perch on her shoulder. She gently strokes the breast feathers as she welcomes her friend back.

She continues to walk as they converse.

"Bern, it sounds like we have skills in common."

She smiles at him.

"And Ryssa, very glad to have a cleric with us again. I miss Karok."

"I am a dragon of the wood. A Paladin in service of the Great Dragon. I can offer minor healing, but mostly my abilities lie in the martial realm. I have begun to take an interest in magical workings which the Great Dragon may deign to bestow upon me. I can detect poison, evil and unnatural creatures."

"I will be pleased to offer the blessings of Lathander to any who need his help."

Jaliera

"As we are busy getting to know one another I will send Whisper out to scout ahead."

She smiles at the newly formed group thinking that they seem a good match for each other. Then she whispers to her owl to fly ahead and watch out for any movement. And to keep a careful watch for any large flying shapes and to return immediately if she sees one.

The first day's journey has been passing quite uneventfully, casual conversation, getting to know one another and each other's abilities.

Jaliera has sent Whisper out to scout around, and with your being on a grassy plain the Owl must naturally fly out far beyond Jaliera's range for communication, returning periodically to report.

Towards early evening, perhaps an hour or two before you were planning to stop for the day and setup camp, the terrain changes. Slowly, such that it was not really noticeable as an actual change and easily mistaken for a random feature.

A sinkhole is passed, then another, then in quick succession a third and a fourth. A pile of disturbed earth off to one side, then a second and a third.

Whisper reports nothing out of the ordinary.

Code:
Name Init AC HP Dam Status
Jaliera 0 14 23 0 Normal
Kriv 0 16 26 0 Normal
Bern 0 15 40 0 Normal
Chandan 0 16 31 0 Normal
Ryssa 0 18 33 0 Normal
Luminmorn 0 18 34 0 Normal
Davroar 0 12 28 0 Normal

Luminmorn

[OOC: Luminmorn's AC is 18 with the shield, 17 without. FYI]

He walked along feeling good in some ways that they were finally moving towards their original goal. In other ways it felt like each step was painful as they left behind those they had lost. Life had it's way, an ebb and a flow, just like so many other aspects of existence.

At the appearance of the holes he wondered about them. They had learned something about the Wave Echo cave, would these be related? For now though he would let those more experienced with these kinds of things comment.
