He sent another firebolt at the one behind the dragonborn and this time the bolt hit him square.

Following the ranger outside, she moved slightly to the right and attacked the twig blight there.

And with a series of well placed blows the last of the plant creatures perishes. You can see now that whoever placed the sign at the entrance to the town was telling the truth.

Having looked around ruined building #1 you had seen nothing of note. Behind you, from where more of the Twig Blight had emerged, two side-by-side cottages (#2) look as though they might have been the homes of prosperous shopkeepers or well-off farmers in their time. All that remains are collapsed walls and piles of debris. Several young trees grow up in the midst of the ruins.

Just beyond the pair of ruined building, you can now see another small house (#4). This one seems to be in better shape and still has it's roof in it's proper place. above and not on the floor.

Further away, on top of the hill you can still make out the round tower with a small cottage attached.

The rest of the town remains hidden by thick trees and brush.

Where to next?

He looked about expecting another attack. When it didn't materialize he relaxed. "The double broken down one and on to that one?" He pointed with his blade to the one that still mostly intact.

"We should check them all, but the order is not important to me", he said with a shrug, prepared to follow whoever wanted to 'take charge'.

While the others debate where to go, Lingo is searching. It's his standard procedure. The halfling is keeping his eyes open and his nose close to the ground.

Seeing Lingo begin to search the area, the cleric of Lathander moves to assist him in his search while the others decided where to next.

Considering the string of attacks, he decided that he would be of more use keeping an eye out for ... the next 'problem'. Hopefully they might get a bit of a warning =before= the trouble hits.

Lingo finds nothing of interest in the area inside #1 or outside #1 and #2. Ryssa assists him and sees nothing out of the ordinary.

After a time, the two of them begin to look inside the double homes. Lingo searches among the debris, but it is Ryssa who notices among the roots of a tree growing up inside the shell of the eastern building a loose flagstone, partially dislodged by a tree root. She can see it exposes the edge of a hole of some sort.

Glancing outside the ruined walls from the eastern home reveals more of the village. The road branches to the east and then at the base of the hill a branch of it leads in a zig zag fashion up the hillside towards the tower (7). Opposite that is a cluster of buildings (5, 6, 8), both ruined and not.

"Perhaps," she told the rogue. "Look at this," she said as she kneeled alongside the loose flagstone and attempted to lift it.

"Looks like a hole here."

"Snakes live in holes," he cautions. But to him it looked like a bolt hole where someone would put something they wanted to hide.

"Yeah, but snakes are not the only ones", he said with a grin. "Anyone else wanna go down there? I am willing to be first down there."

He comes over to see what is going on and notices the hole and the discussion about going in.

"Perhaps a light might help decide." he said, taking out a copper coin and casting light on it and handing it to one of them.

"Toss it down and then you can see before you leap."

"Thanks!" he says as the glowing coin lifts off of Balthazar's hand and starts floating down the hole.

"Don't worry, I'll give it back," he says. It's probably not what the greedy little thief would want to do, but he thought it was the right thing to say.

As the coin floated down, Lingo stayed outside but looked down the hole, his dagger in his hand.

Moving the tile and lowering the glowing coin reveals that the hole is not terribly deep, perhaps 2 feet. It also reveals that it is not empty. A small metal chest, green and red with age and rust sits inside the hole.

He had his mage hand move around the chest with the light to see if he could spot a trap. He focused on the lock itself. Then, if he found a trap, he had the hand try and disarm it. Otherwise he put down the glowing coin and then he had the hand start to pick the lock.

Lingo struggles with the chest, unable to open the lock. He twists and turns his Mage Hand back and forth, up and down, and still there is no satisfying "click" sound. After several minutes his frustration catches up with him and he kicks the chest with his foot, whereupon the lid simply flops open.

Inside he and Ryssa can see numerous coins, mostly of copper but some silver and a few gold peek through.

"Well now, that is interesting," she said with a smile.

"Is it safe, do you think, Lingo, to pull the chest out into the open and check underneath the coins?"

"Only one way to find out" he says as he steps back to avoid any kind of blast. His spectral hand remains and starts to pull the chest out.

Chest is easily pulled out, as long as Lingo's strength score is good enough to lift it. With Ryssa's help it should not be a problem. Let me know if you are going to count the coins.

She lent her strength to the Halfling and then looked down into the chest. She reached in and moved the coins back and forth to see if they hid anything underneath.

"Should we count them?"

It takes some time, but with both of them counting they reach a tally of 700cp, 160sp, and 90gp.
