Her glances down the corridor in the direction of her companions and the conversation she hears tells her that things are under control at least for now. So she stays where she is watching for any other bandits or the familiar to show themselves.

At this point I need to know what you're doing with the Redbrand Ruffians and the prisoners

"Up against the far wall."

He strode in, claiming the surrendered weapons, bringing his maul up to the ready position.

"Without law, there is no justice. Let us apply one of the most fundamental of laws here. An eye for an eye, restitution through retribution. Prisoners, awake! Your incarceration is unjust and without merit. You are freed, and will be slipped of your bonds in short order. Bear witness to your guards, your jailers. Did they mistreat you? Abuse you? Cause harm to you or your loved ones? Speak now, and speak truly."

The dragonborn marches into the jail room and sees three individuals, two women and a boy. The women are locked in a cell to the south and the boy alone in a cell to the north. The two women are huddling together in fear but the boy stands and answers, "They killed my daddy."

She follows Kriv into the room and sighs at the answer the boy gives, but follows with a question of her own. "Which ones?"

Hobbling and cursing vitriolically in his native tongue, he hears the boy's accusation. Scowling, he swings his spear in a decapitating blow at the ruffian who stabbed him.

He lets out a low grumble of frustration when Chandan goes off again, attacking the guard that they just five seconds ago had managed to convince to lay down their weapons. Nevertheless, he hopes Iarno who is lying within a claw strike will regard his growl as a warning not to try anything stupid.

She does not want to let her companions out of her sight and so she moves down the corridor to take a stance just inside the door to the sarcophagi room. (13.15)

As well as keeping an eye on what is happening in the prison room, he main attention is still focused back up the corridor.

Without warning, the monk strikes out against the man that had surrendered. With a flurry of blows he snaps the man's neck and he drops dead to the ground.

The younger of the two women in the southern cages cries out in horror when she witnesses the slaying of the Redbrand Ruffian. At the same time the other ruffian cries out "MURDERER!!!" and charges Chandan. Since he has discarded his weapon, he punches the monk who gets smacked right in the face by the man's fist.

Ruffian Attacks Chandan
Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4 and got 23,6

Chandan takes 1 point of damage.

Mirna, Nars, Nilsa Reaction (wisdom) to Chandan
Neptune rolled 1d20,1d20,1d20 and got 11, 11, 9

As a result of the killing of the surrendered Redbrand Ruffian, the party, from this point forward, will have disadvantage in the town on any persuasion skill checks. Future actions could alter this.

"Humans. So little discipline, so very fragile. I'll not tolerate a violated surrender. Here: I will not intervene. Let this be a trial by combat: You who both live by violence, let the Gods decide your guilt or innocence."

So saying, he slid one of the surrendered blades to the Ruffian.

Silently he wishes that Karok did not have to leave so suddenly. His presence could have calmed the situation down with no further violence.

Seeing Kriv give the guard his sword back, Davroar takes a hesitant step forward, but quickly goes back to watching the wizard. He was tempted to return to his human form to voice his own opinion, but figures it would be a waste of time trying to talk them out of fighting. Chandan is much older than him and would probably ignore any words of common sense from a sixteen year-old.

Still keeping watch she is confounded by the events in the room.

"Haven't we more important things to do?"

Far too much masculine pride in this group. She glances at Kallista hoping for some reason. They are already a man down with a huge quest ahead. At this rate they will need to recruit.

The ruffian claimed the sword and prepared for Chandan's attack. If there's any hesitation, he'll look for an opening to strike.

"Idiots." She grunts roughly, then moves into the room, avoiding the combat and moves to the prisoners looking for keys to open the cells. If no keys are readily handy she will gesture Jaliera over.

"I am not with them", she says to the prisoners. "Oh, I am traveling with them, mostly for protection, but they are too chaotic and undisciplined for me. Once I free you I will make sure to keep them away from you."

The monk lunges with the spear, even as the first ruffian's body is falling to the floor. This time it is the second of the Redbrands that will suffer.

Murderer indeed. He will show them that throwing down your murder weapon does not suddenly absolve you of murder.

The monk gets in his first blow but misses with the next two. The ruffian drives his sword into Chandan, pulls it out and pokes him again. Both blows cut into him.

To the pain! For next round:

Chandan. Hit roll vs Redbrand ruffian with Flurry of Blows. 18+5=23,9+5=14,7+5=12
Damage roll 4+3=7,2+3=5.]

Chandan

With the day he's having, one more stinging cut quickly mingles into the rest of the pain in his wizened frame.

But the spear doesn't drop yet.

Chandan's second round of attacks dispatches the second ruffian who crumbles to the ground at the monks feet.

I'll let the rest of you act now.

Kallista enters the room just at about the same time that the monk kills the second ruffian. The prisoners move back in the cells, away from the demonic looking tiefling. They do not know what to think.

Kallista, please provide a persuasion skill check - at disadvantage, of course.

Inaro
He looks up to the bear, "Is this the fairness I am to expect? I've been forthcoming and I asked my men to back down. You are worse than ... "

The old man plants the butt of his spear on the ground and lets out a long breath, whilst reaching for his gourd. Unfortunately he'd already drained and disposed of it earlier.

"Your mistake is to think that surrendering to punishment atones for the crime you commit.

"Will your oily words bring back their father you murdered?" He says to the self-serving wizard, pointing to the cells.

Chandan feels no need to mention however many women and children, enslaved and tormented by Inaro's gang. He turns his head and bows his head to the captives.

"You are safe now, and no more families will be destroyed by these men. The rule of the Redbrands is over."

"An old man with a pointed stick has bested a young man in his prime with a sword. So be it. Though the wounds of transgression are plain on the one, it is clear what the Gods think of the murder of your father by these men. This trial by combat is concluded."

Kriv stands near Chandan over the broken bodies at their feet and declares the monk victor in fair combat against the ruffian.

Inaro's answer the monk something and gives him something to think about. "Are you sure of your verdicts and conclusions or are you simply a murderer?" He doesn't try anything with the bear standing over him.

Mosk seems to have no reaction to humans killing humans. It seems reasonable to the bugbear.

Kalista moves over to the southern cages and examines the lock on it.

"I don't know who has the key," the elder woman says. "I am Mirna and this here is my daughter Nilsa and that's my son Nars in the other cage." Apparently the woman feels alright about Kallista.

Meanwhile Jaliera stands guard nearby.

"I could not murder you, Inaro. I could only avenge those whose lives you have taken, extract the price of your sins and administer punishment for your transgressions. Kidnapping, false imprisonment, murder, consorting with outlaws and with enemies of the state: Do you really consider yourself in a position to moralize? Your entire species is weak, flawed and capricious. Enough. Where is the cell key?"

"Jaliera, can you come here and see if you can open this?, she calls as Kriv asks Iarno for the key.

She simply frowns as Kriv performs the exact same moralization he accuses Iarno of. Killing unarmed prisoners is murder. There is no other word for it. There are laws that account for the handling of accused criminals, and slaughtering them, unarmed, without trial or proof is not among them. At least in every civilized society she's experienced.

With the combat over and with their numerical superiority (not counting the skeletons as they seem docile enough), he feels more confident and will shift back to his human form. Bending down he will untie Iarno's bound feet and help the man up to stand. Davroar will remain slightly behind Iarno keeping a firm grip just above the mans right elbow, and will not offer an apology to him but simply states in a quiet voice, "I like to think I am fair, but I'm more cautious than fair when dealing with people I don't know."
