On this day in history... 1675 - King Charles II of England orders the construction of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. 1715 - A French manufacturer debuted the first folding umbrella. 1859 - Cornwall Railway opened across the Royal Albert Bridge linking the counties of Devon and Cornwall in England. 1886 - Chichester Bell and Charles S. Tainter patented the gramophone. It was the first practical phonograph. 1932 - Al Capone entered the Atlanta Penitentiary federal prison for income-tax evasion. 1961 - Thirteen civil rights activists, dubbed "Freedom Riders," began a bus trip through the South. 1972 - The Don't Make A Wave Committee, a fledgling environmental organization founded in Canada in 1971, officially changes its name to "Greenpeace Foundation". 1991 - Phil Collins and Al Jarreau received Honorary Doctor of Music Degrees from Berklee College of Music during cermonies in Boston. 1999 - Several severe tornadoes hit the Midwest U.S. overnight.
